With new active ingredients, co-packs, tank mixes, and many generic products, growers will want to look past the product name to understand what they are buying. Here is a summary of new pesticide products that are hitting the shelves in time for spraying – with product information provided by the manufacturers.

Here is a summary of new pesticide products that are hitting the shelves in time for spraying – with product information provided by the manufacturers.

Grassy weed herbicides
Cordon
Active Ingredient: fenoxaprop-P-ethyl
Herbicide Group: 1
Manufacturer: Nufarm Agriculture

Cordon contains the same active ingredient fenoxaprop found in Puma120Super, which is widely used on wheat and barley acres across Western Canada. Cordon is a Group 1 herbicide for control of wild oats, green foxtail, yellow foxtail and barnyard grass in spring wheat, durum wheat and barley. Cordon can be tank mixed with a wide range of broadleaf herbicides for one-pass weed control.

NextStep NG
Active Ingredient: clodinafop
Herbicide Group: 1
Manufacturer: Ayrsta LifeScience

NextStep NG is registered in spring wheat, including durum, for control of barnyard grass, green foxtail, yellow foxtail, volunteer canaryseed, volunteer oat and Persian darnel.

Sierra
Active Ingredient: flucarbazone
Herbicide Group: 2
Manufacturer: Syngenta

If growers are not rotating their crops or herbicides, chances are that wild oats and other grass weeds have made themselves at home in their wheat fields. Now growers can catch these weeds by surprise by introducing Sierra, a new Group 2 wheat herbicide, into their weed management program.

Puma Advance
Active Ingredient: fenoxaprop-P-ethyl
Herbicide Group: 1
Manufacturer: Bayer CropScience

Puma Advance is a new grassy weed herbicide. Its innovative formulation delivers superior crop safety and refined wild oat control in wheat and barley without having to clean out the sprayer.

Ladder
Active Ingredient: clodinafop-propargyl
Herbicide Group: 1
Manufacturer: Mana Canada

Ladder is registered for spring wheat and durum and is tank-mixable with nearly 30 broadleaf herbicides. Key weeds include: wild and volunteer oats, foxtail, Persian darnel (at high rate) and barnyard grass. It comes packaged in a 40-acre case or a Convenience Pak that treats 240 acres with adjuvant supplied separately.

Attain XC
Active Ingredients: fluroxypyr plus 2,4-D
Herbicide Group: 4
Manufacturer: Dow AgroSciences

Attain XC contains two highly effective Group 4 active ingredients. This combination delivers excellent control of more than 40 broadleaf weeds including tough competitors like kochia, cleavers, stork’s bill, round-leaved mallow, volunteer flax and vetch, as well as providing superior control of Group 2 resistant chickweed and kochia. Attain XC is a newly registered, more highly concentrate Attain product.

Prestige XC
Active Ingredients: fluroxypyr plus clopyralid
Herbicide Group: 4
Manufacturer: Dow AgroSciences

Prestige XC herbicide tank-mix provides control of a wide spectrum of broadleaf weeds including hard-to-control weeds such as cleavers, kochia, wild buckwheat, perennial sow thistle and Canada thistle, as well as suppression of hemp-nettle and common chickweed, in spring wheat, durum wheat and spring barley. Prestige XC is a newly registered more highly concentrated Prestige product.

Pulsar
Active Ingredient: fluroxypyr (113.3g/L) plus dicamba (86.9g/L)
Herbicide Group: 4
Manufacturer: Syngenta

Pulsar controls a variety of broadleaf weeds in wheat, durum and barley with its dual-action, pre-mixed formula. Pulsar will control any type of kochia, herbicide resistant or not.

Barricade
Active Ingredients: thifensulfuron plus tribenuron plus fluroxypyr
Herbicide Groups: 2 and 4
Manufacturer: DuPont

Barricade provides consistently powerful control of key broadleaf weeds, including both cleavers and kochia in spring wheat, durum and barley. It has a wide window of application, easy-to-handle packaging and helps manage weed resistance using multiple modes of action.

PrecisionPac
DuPont has five new PrecisionPac herbicides registered: DB-6654, PP-1254, PP-31155, PP-E39-147 and PP-E32-179. This brings the number of PrecisionPac herbicides up to 14 registered products.  See chart on page 26.

Retain
Active Ingredient: thifensulfuron methyl plus tribenuron methyl plus fluroxypyr + 2,4-D ester
Herbicide Groups: 2 and 4
Manufacturer: Viterra

Retain provides post-emergence broadleaf weed control in wheat (spring, durum) and barley. Retain combines the benefits of Group 2 and 4 herbicides, providing a strong product option for controlling broadleaf weeds including cleavers, kochia, wild buckwheat, hemp-nettle and narrow-leaved hawk’s-beard.

Grassy and broadleaf weed herbicides
Thumper Total
Active Ingredient: thiencarbazone plus bromoxynil plus 2,4-D
Herbicide Group: 2, 4 and 6
Manufacturer: Bayer CropScience

Thumper Total herbicide is everything a grower needs for wheat. It is an effective resistance management tool that provides superior grassy and broadleaf weed protection, even against Group 2-resistant kochia. Thumper Total provides exceptional flexibility that allows growers to safely rotate back to pulse crops the next season.

Tundra
Active Ingredient: pyrasulfotole plus bromoxynil and fenoxaprop-p-ethyl
Herbicide Group: 27 and 6 and 1
Manufacturer: Bayer CropScience

There has been a big change in the herbicide landscape for wheat and barley. Tundra herbicide is the newest innovation from Bayer CropScience that will change the way growers think about spraying. It is the first ever pre-mixed grassy and broadleaf formulation with no additional tank mixing required.

Non-selective herbicides
Takkle
Active Ingredient: glyphosate and dicamba (both present as isopropylamine salts)
Herbicide Group: 4 and 9
Manufacturer: Syngenta

Takkle herbicide is approved for non-selective weed control in preseed (cereals: wheat barley, rye, oats, and field corn only) and summerfallow. This is a new premix product that, in summerfallow, will provide unsurpassed thistle control, excellent control of winter annuals and control of Group 2-resistant broadleaf weeds, including kochia. Takkle has consistent performance in tough conditions and against bigger weeds.

Polaris
Active Ingredient: glyphosate
Herbicide Group: 9
Manufacturer: DuPont.

DuPont is now offering a glyphosate product that is a perfect partner for Express SG or Express Pro in a pre-seed burn-down, chem-fallow or post-harvest application.  It is a 360 g.a.e. isopropyl amine formulation.

FirstStep Complete
Active Ingredient: tribenuron methyl plus glyphosate
Herbicide Groups: 2 and 9
Manufacturer: Viterra

FirstStep Complete is a convenient pre-seed product that is a fit for fields when a pre-seed glyphosate application is just not enough to control early emerging tough-to-control weeds. It controls difficult weeds such as dandelion, flixweed, narrow-leaved hawk’s-beard, cow cockle and volunteer canola (including glyphosate tolerant).

Pre-Pare Complete
Active Ingredients: flucarbazone plus glyphosate
Herbicide Groups: 2 and 9
Manufacturer: Viterra

Pre-Pare Complete offers extended weed control benefits for the pre-seed glyphosate burn-down application. Protects against many grassy weeds including wild oats and green foxtail, and a variety of broadleaf weeds, including wild buckwheat, flixweed, Canada thistle and cow cockle.

StartUp
Active Ingredients: glyphosate
Herbicide Groups: 9
Manufacturer: Viterra

StartUp is an excellent option for farmers looking for a high-quality glyphosate at a reasonable price. The highly concentrated formulation means fewer litres per acre. StartUp is available in a size unique to Western Canada: a 667 L tote, which will cover 1000 acres.

Label changes
Triton K – wild buckwheat up to the four-leaf stage: use on durum wheat and winter wheat

Triton C
– tank-mix with Axial plus the reduced rate of MCPA or with PrecisionPac Harmony Grass.

Express PRO
– new weeds: residual control of cleavers (up to eight centimetres); control of scentless chamomile (up to eight centimetres); control of white cockle (rosette); suppression of night-flowering catchfly (up to eight centimetres).

Assert – Infinity is now registered with Assert wild oat herbicide. With Assert, growers get wild oat control in barley and wheat, plus Assert is the only Group 2 herbicide registered for use in barley. In combination with Assert, the addition of Infinity, a Group 27 herbicide gives growers a new mode of action to fight weed resistance.
